Tokyo, Dhu-AlQa'dah 10, 1436, August 25, 2015, SPA -- A powerful typhoon battered south-western Japan Tuesday, prompting evacuations and disrupting traffic, local media reported, according to dpa. Evacuation advisories were issued to hundreds of thousands of residents after the Meteorological Agency said Typhoon Goni made landfall on Arao city on the island of Kyushu. About 250 flights had been canceled Tuesday and dozens of train services suspended. Hundreds of thousands of homes lost electricity on Kyushu, broadcaster NHK reported. Authorities were warning of landslides, swollen rivers and high waves in the region. The eye of the storm was around Iizuka city in northern Kyushu, travelling north-north-east at 45 kilometres per hour, the agency said Tuesday morning. The 15th typhoon of the season carried maximum sustained winds of 144 kilometres per hour and gusts of 198 kph, the agency said. Rainfall of up to 300 millimetres was forecast for the south-western island of Shikoku, the Kinki and Tokai regions and up to 250 millimetres for northern Kyushu by Tuesday morning, it said. --SPA 03:30 LOCAL TIME 00:30 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
