Powerful typhoon slams into south-western Japanese islands

Tokyo, Dhu-AlQa'dah 09, 1436, August 24, 2015, SPA -- A powerful typhoon battered south-western Japanese islands Monday after killing at least 14 in the Philippines, local media reported, according to dpa. Several residents were injured and more than 80 people evacuated their homes as Typhoon Goni pounded Ishigaki island overnight, Okinawa Times newspaper reported, citing local authorities. About 20,000 households lost electricity on Ishigaki and other south-western islands while more than 100 flights have already been canceled Monday, the paper said. Authorities were warning of high waves, heavy rains and strong winds in the region and the island of Kyushu. As of 8 am (2300 GMT Sunday), the eye of the storm was 120 kilometres west-south-west of Kume island, travelling north-east at 25 kilometres per hour, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The 15th typhoon of the season carried maximum sustained winds of 180 kph and gusts of 252 kph, the agency said.
