Berlin, Ramadan 01, 1436, June 18, 2015, SPA -- Chancellor Angela Merkel called Thursday for more European states to help share the burden of dealing with refugees entering the region, dpa reported. "It can't be that only 5 of the (28) European Union members take three quarters of the total number of refugees," Merkel told parliament ahead of an EU leaders' summit next week. "By far the most urgent task is improving sea rescue operations," the chancellor said, citing the large numbers of people who have died attempting to make the often perilous journey across the Mediterranean to Europe. "The tragedy, which plays out repeatedly, profoundly affects us all," Merkel told parliament.
