Rome, Rajab 18, 1436, May 07, 2015, SPA -- Rome's main airport was closed Thursday following an overnight fire that damaged the domestic and European flights terminal, dpa reported. The fire at Fiumicino's terminal 3 broke out shortly after midnight. There were conflicting reports about where the flames started, but there was no immediate suggestion of an arson attack. Road and rail connections to the airport were closed by police. Smoke clouds could be seen billowing from a distance. The Rome-based Il Messaggero newspaper said 13 people were slightly intoxicated by the fire, but were not in a serious condition, while an employee of Dutch airline KLM was taken to hospital for a suspected stroke. Flight control authorities said Fiumicino would reopen at 2 pm (1200 GMT), but the company running the site, Aeroporti di Roma, indicated that it might happen earlier. In a statement issued at 8 am, it said the airport was "gradually reopening to air traffic, thanks to the work of fire services and police." --SPA 10:22 LOCAL TIME 07:22 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
