Rome, Rajab 18, 1436, May 07, 2015, SPA -- Rome's main airport gradually resumed normal activities Thursday after being closed for several hours due to a fire that damaged its domestic and European flights terminal, dpa reported. The company running Fiumicino, Aeroporti di Roma, said in a statement that flights would start resuming from noon (1000 GMT). The fire broke out shortly after midnight, and smoke clouds could be seen billowing into the sky from several kilometers. Authorities initially sealed off the airport, closing motorway and rail connections, but transport links were reopened as the situation got under control. The chairman of the Italian Civil Aviation Authority, Vito Riggio, said the fire was probably caused by an electrical short circuit in the shopping mall of Terminal 3. "The part of Terminal 3 after security controls, that is, the shopping area, has been destroyed. The rest is accessible," the chief executive of Aeroporti di Roma, Lorenzo Lo Presti, told reporters. --SPA 15:00 LOCAL TIME 12:00 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
