Manila, Dhu-AlQa'dah 16, 1436, Aug 31, 2015, SPA -- Five mountaineers were killed when they were swept away by strong currents while crossing a river in the northern Philippines, police said Monday. According to dpa, one person was still missing after the accident near San Jose town in Tarlac province, 117 kilometres north of Manila, said Senior Superintendent Alex Tintin, the provincial police director. The victims were part of a 53-member team that went on an outreach programme to distribute school supplies to children in a tribal community at the weekend. "On the way back, they passed by a river and six of them were swept away by strong currents," said Boboy Francisco, a founder of a mountaineering group helping with search and rescue operations. "The problem was they didn't get a local guide." --SPA 20:51 LOCAL TIME 17:51 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
