Vienna, Jumada II 19, 1436, Apr 8, 2015, SPA -- Customs investigators have seized 4.4 tons of dried khat at Zurich airport in the past two weeks, Swiss customs officials said Wednesday. Camouflaged as food and tea, the stimulants were shipped from Kenya and Tanzania to Switzerland. They were destined for various European, Asian, and North American countries, dpa reported. Although fresh and easily perishable leaves of the khat plant have been frequently seized in various countries, the Swiss find was unusually large and one of the first involving dried khat, said Heinz Widmer, customs chief at Zurich airport. Dried khat is much more durable, opening additional possibilities for drug traders, Widmer said. Khat seizures in Europe and North America more than doubled from 64 to 150 tons between 2004 and 2011, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) reported last year. --SPA 18:54 LOCAL TIME 15:54 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
