Jakarta, Sha'ban 17, 1436, June 04, 2015, SPA -- More than 2,700 people were moved from their homes near a volcano on Indonesia's Sumatra island on Thursday following a sharp increase in volcanic activity, an official said, according to dpa. The alert for Mount Sinabung was raised to the highest level at midnight on Tuesday as authorities fears that its growing lava dome could collapse any time. "There was no panic because residents have adapted well to the volcano after previous eruptions," said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency. Mount Sinabung has erupted intermittently since late 2013. Sixteen people were killed and tens of thousands were temporarily displaced during an intense period of eruptions early last year. Nearly 2,000 people are still living in temporary shelters as a result of last year's eruptions. Others either returned to their homes or were relocated elsewhere. --SPA 15:25 LOCAL TIME 12:25 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
