33 dead as Typhoon Rammasun hits China

BEIJING, Ramadan 24, 1435, Jul 21, 2014, SPA -- 33 people died in southern China as Typhoon Rammasun passed through Hainan, Guangdong, Yunnan and Guangxi Zhuang regions, UPI cited authorities as saying Monday. The death toll was revised upward after seven people were confirmed dead in a Yunnan province mudslide. The typhoon, regarded as China's most severe in 40 years, passed through Japan's outer islands and the Philippines, then gathered strength in the South China Sea and struck southern China. Over 8 million people in China were affected, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said Monday. Over 600,000 people were evacuated, and 240,000 are in need of basic services. The Guangdong region reported losses of 12.7 billion yuan ($2.04 billion), with 7,800 houses destroyed by the typhoon.
