Washington, Shawwal 16, 1435, August 12, 2014, SPA -- The crew of a container ship was working Monday to rescue three people aboard a disabled sailboat that was damaged by Hurricane Julio and encountered 10-meter waves hundreds of kilometers off Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean, the U.S. Coast Guard said. The crew of the 200-meter cargo ship Manukai was trying to help the three people on the 13-meter sailboat transfer to a life raft, spokeswoman Petty Officer Melissa McKenzie said, adding that previous rescue attempts failed because of rough weather in the area nearly 700 kilometers northeast of the Hawaiian island of Oahu. The crew of the sailboat sent a distress signal Sunday morning as Julio moved across the Pacific near the Hawaiian islands. The vessel was caught in winds between 148 and 185 kilometers per hour, and one of its hatches was blown off along with its life raft, the Coast Guard said. --SPA 11:44 LOCAL TIME 08:44 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
