United Nations, Ramadan 26, 1435, Jul 23, 2014, SPA -- The U.N. humanitarian chief on Wednesday allocated $75 million from the U.N. Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to urgent relief operations in the West African Sahel and the Horn of Africa. “With so many crises competing for attention, many people in need are forgotten,” Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos, said in a statement about the funding that will go to 11 countries in the region. “This allocation will help critical emergency operations in the Sahel and in the Horn of Africa, regions with high levels of malnutrition and food insecurity,” said Amos. The Horn region will receive $44.5 million, and countries in the Sahel receiving $30.5 million for emergency operations. The funding is the second of two annual allocations from the CERF Underfunded Emergencies, which ensure urgent humanitarian work continues in countries that desperately need it. --SPA 23:41 LOCAL TIME 20:41 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
