Washington, Shawwal 16, 1435, Aug 12, 2014, SPA -- The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations said on Tuesday that sanctions could be imposed on South Sudan if human-rights violations continue. After her meeting with South Sudan’s president, Salva Kiir, Samantha Power said that “the [U.N. Security Council] has made it very clear: that is it prepared to impose consequences if there continue to be people carrying out gross violations of human rights.” Violence occurred in December after Kiir accused his former vice president, Riek Machar, of attempting a coup, which caused friction between both leaders’ communities. The government and rebels agreed to peace talks and the formation of a transitional government but no changes have been made, and the council plans to meet with rebel chief Riek Machar. “We will not tolerate violation of the cessation of hostilities and people who spoil the peace agreement,” Power told reporters. --SPA 00:18 LOCAL TIME 21:18 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
