Brussels/Belgrade, Sha'ban 1, 1435, May 30, 2014, SPA -- Massive flooding in the Balkans last week caused billions of euros in direct damage and may adversely affect economic growth while fueling inflation, the European bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) said Thursday. According to "very rough preliminary estimates," Serbia suffered 1.5-2 billion euros (2-2.7 billion dollars) and Bosnia 1.3 billion euros in direct damage, dpa quoted EBRD as saying. The flooding has hit the agriculture, which accounts for about 10 per cent of gross domestic product in Serbia and 6 per cent in Bosnia, hard and is expected to cause losses measured in the hundreds of millions of euros. Power generation and mining have been badly affected in Serbia - its largest coal pit, which supplies half of all fuel for thermal plants, has been totally flooded. Transport infrastructure suffered in both countries, causing delays, the EBRD said. Possible shortages, including of food, may fuel inflation, which has been low in both countries, EBRD said. --SPA 15:19 LOCAL TIME 12:19 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
