Mexico City, Muharram 08, 1439, September 28, 2017, SPA -- The Mexican government on Wednesday estimated that damage caused by two serious earthquakes this month will be well over 2 billion dollars, according to dpa. President Enrique Pena Nieto said 370 million dollars is needed to repair damage in the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas that occurred in the September 7 earthquake. The 8.2-magnitude earthquake, whose epicentre was in the Pacific Ocean, killed 100 people in the southern part of the country. Far more money will be needed to recover from the second large earthquake, measured at magnitude 7.1, that struck September 19. Its epicentre was about 130 kilometres south of Mexico City, causing severe damage in the Mexican capital. The number of people who died is 337, nearly 200 of them in Mexico City. In addition to an estimated 570 million dollars in repair costs for buildings, the country faces an estimated 740 million dollars in costs to repair damaged schools. The earthquakes also damaged more than 1,500 churches and historic buildings. The cost of restoring those buildings is more than 400 million dollars, Culture Minister Maria Cristina Garcia Cepeda said. The states of Morelos and Puebla saw damage to 14 temples and monasteries from the 16th century that were on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites. "I hope that in a short time, in a few months, everything will be restored," Pena Nieto said. --SPA 04:14 LOCAL TIME 01:14 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w499727
