Washington, Ramadan 10, 1435, Jul 7, 2014, SPA -- A severe thunderstorm with winds estimated at more than 128 kilometers per hour (kph) injured several people and caused significant damage to homes in western Michigan, as officials warned of flash floods Monday due to heavy rain. The thunderstorm late Sunday over Kentwood, just south of Grand Rapids may have produced a brief tornado, the National Weather Service said. The service sent crews to survey the area Monday to determine whether a tornado hit. The weather service received reports that a couple of buildings had partially collapsed and that the storm downed numerous trees and power lines. Kent County emergency management coordinator Jack Stewart told WOOD-TV that six people were injured, but the severity of their injuries were unknown. The weather service said that two people were taken to the hospital. Flash flood warnings were in effect Monday for a number of western and central Michigan counties as more storms moved through the state. The American Red Cross opened a shelter at Kentwood Community Center for those without power or otherwise displaced from their homes. CMS Energy’s Consumers Energy Unit said early Monday that roughly 20,000 customers lost power. About 9,600 of those homes and businesses are in Kent County, including Kentwood. The company said that it could be late Tuesday before power is fully restored. --SPA 20:50 LOCAL TIME 17:50 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w
