London, Sha'ban 14, 1439, April 30, 2018, SPA -- British Home Secretary Amber Rudd has resigned, Prime Minister Theresa May's office said late Sunday, after she allegedly misled Parliament over illegal immigrant removal targets, according to dpa. "The prime minister has tonight accepted the resignation of the home secretary," a Downing Street spokesman said. Rudd had faced calls for her resignation from the opposition Labour party after she told a parliamentary committee last week that the government had no illegal immigrant removal targets, before later admitting that "local targets" did exist. But she had been under pressure for the past two weeks over the so-called Windrush scandal, after immigrants from the Caribbean invited to settle in Britain decades ago were classified as illegal. The "Windrush generation" came to Britain between the late 1940s and the early 1970s as the country faced huge labour shortages, and had the legal right to remain in Britain. However under new immigration rules introduced when May was home secretary in 2012, they were told they needed evidence including passports to continue working and receiving other benefits. Many who could not produce the correct documentation faced deportation. May has also drawn ire for her role in the scandal, with Labour accusing her of using Rudd as a "human shield." --SPA 03:18 LOCAL TIME 00:18 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/w679376
