The Organization of Islamic Cooperation held on Tuesday Israel responsible for the “martyrdom” of Palestinian prisoner Khader Adnan in one of its jails. Accusing Israel of medical negligence, it condemned its inhumane treatment of Palestinian prisoners and their deprivation of their basic rights that are safeguarded by international treaties and agreements. The OIC stressed that it stands in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners, demanding relevant international organization to immediately intervene to protect their rights and pressure Israel, as an occupier, to cease its constant violations and ensure their immediate release. Rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip Tuesday following the death in Israeli custody of Adnan, a leading figure in the Islamic Jihad group who was on hunger strike. Israel's prison service said "a national security detainee... (who) began a hunger strike on 5.2.23, died this morning." Islamic Jihad confirmed the death in a statement. Adnan was arrested by Israeli forces at his home near the West Bank city of Jenin on February 5, according to previous comments from the group. A medic from the group Physicians for Human Rights Israel visited Adnan in prison earlier this week and warned that he "faces imminent death", while calling for him to be "urgently transferred to a hospital."
