RIYADH: A Saudi team of 35 students is competing at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in Dallas, US, from May 12-19. The team is taking part through the support of the King Abdullah and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba) and the Saudi Ministry of Education. About 1,800 students from 70 countries are competing in the fair, with finalists in line for $9 million in awards, prizes and scholarships. The Kingdom has taken part in the ISEF exhibition every year since 2007, as part of an annual program organized by Mawhiba in partnership with the Ministry of Education. Among the Saudi participants are Yazan Alflayyeh, who worked for a year to produce a laboratory version of the fragrance dehn oud; Abdullah Al-Ghaziwi, who has created a program to detect cancerous cells in human blood; and Fatima Alghanim, whose project focuses on preventing integrated circuit piracy. Team members were chosen from winners at the National Olympiad for Scientific Creativity “Ibdaa 2023,” a program Mawhiba offers annually for talented students. More than 146,000 students registered for the program. Saudi students claimed 106 prizes at ISEF last year, including 69 grand awards and 37 special awards. This year’s Saudi team underwent intensive training with the help of Saudi and foreign specialists, including academics, experts and arbitrators in various disciplines.
