Wayne Rooney endured a loss in his first match in charge of Birmingham as Morgan Rogers’s last-gasp effort snatched a 1-0 victory for Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium. The 21-year-old had been on the pitch 13 minutes when he fired home in the 89th minute to earn Middlesbrough a fifth straight Championship win. The result moved Michael Carrick’s side just one point behind his former team-mate Rooney’s seventh-placed City, who lost for a fourth game in a row on the road. Daniel Farke made a triumphant return to Carrow Road as his Leeds side hit back to record a dramatic 3-2 victory over his former club Norwich. The Canaries were two goals to the good at the break, with Shane Duffy heading home early on and Gabriel Sara firing in just before the interval. But Duffy scored at the wrong end to bring Leeds back into it just after the hour mark, and a late double from Crysencio Summerville turned the match on its head. The defeat continued a poor run for Norwich while maintaining the upward momentum of the visitors, who have lost once in 10 league games. Leaders Leicester came from behind to beat Swansea 3-1 and became the first side in the second tier to win their opening six away matches of a league campaign. Matt Grimes volleyed home his third goal of the season to put Swansea ahead in the 20th minute. Jannik Vestergaard and Abdul Fatawu responded with their first goals for Leicester in the 43rd and 63rd minutes respectively before Kelechi Iheanacho bagged his side’s third in the closing stages as Leicester made it 11 victories from 12 games this season. Preston halted a run of three straight defeats with a hard-fought 1-1 draw at home to managerless Millwall. It took three minutes for them to get on the scoresheet as Danish striker Mads Frøkjaer-Jensen slotted home his third of the season. But the visitors, in their first match after the dismissal of Gary Rowett, hit back through a fine turn and finish from Zian Flemming after half an hour. Stoke secured a first home win since August as they battled for a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Sunderland. The Potters took an early lead when the returning Ryan Mmaee opened his league account after a summer switch from Ferencváros. The celebrations were cut short when Jack Clarke levelled soon after with his eighth league goal of the season, but Stoke regained the lead with Luke McNally’s first goal since March 2022. Substitute Ryan Fraser’s dramatic late goal earned Southampton a 2-1 win at Hull. The home side looked up against it in the 20th minute when Will Smallbone opened the scoring for the visitors, who are finally clicking into gear under Russell Martin. But Hull had been the better side until Smallbone scored and deservedly equalised five minutes later through Liam Delap. Late Southampton pressure allowed Fraser the chance to sweep home with virtually the last kick of the game. Centre-back Rob Dickie was Bristol City’s match-winner in a 1-0 victory over Coventry at Ashton Gate. Having survived incessant pressure, the home side took the lead in first-half stoppage time when Dickie rose to net with a downward header from Taylor Gardner-Hickman’s free-kick. Joe Rankin-Costello’s first goal of the season earned Blackburn a 1-0 home victory over Cardiff. The midfielder’s second-half strike – their only on-target attempt – condemned the Bluebirds to a third straight defeat on the road. A fine solo effort by substitute Yaser Asprilla in the final 10 minutes proved the decisive moment as Watford defeated Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 at Vicarage Road. The Colombian had only been on the pitch for four minutes before he ruined the first game in charge for Danny Rohl. Plymouth secured their first clean sheet in seven games with a 0-0 draw against West Brom at The Hawthorns. Argyle went closest to breaking the deadlock when Morgan Whittaker hit the inside of the post after 13 minutes. Plymouth goalkeeper Michael Cooper made his first senior appearance for eight months following a ruptured cruciate ligament. Darren Moore secured his first win as Huddersfield manager with his side running out 2-1 victors over struggling QPR. Quick-fire goals from Kian Harratt and Jack Rudoni in the first half did the damage at the John Smith’s Stadium, while Jake Clarke-Salter’s first goal for QPR proved to be a mere consolation – piling more pressure on manager Gareth Ainsworth.
