In a significant development, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has announced the inclusion of Saudi Arabia in the UN Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The advisory body, comprising 39 members representing governments, private entities, civil society organizations and the academic community globally, aims to provide insights and recommendations on AI-related matters. Dr. Latifa bint Mohammad Al-Abdulkareem, a member of the Shoura Council, has been chosen to represent the Kingdom on this influential platform. Secretary-General Guterres emphasized the diverse backgrounds of the high-level Advisory body"s members, encompassing various perspectives in terms of gender, geography, and age. The decision comes after Saudi Arabia hosted a consultative meeting during the Global Artificial Intelligence Summit in 2022, organized by the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA). This meeting focused on the establishment of the UN Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence. The initiative to create the advisory body was introduced in 2020 as part of the UN secretary-general"s digital cooperation roadmap. The body"s purpose is to conduct thorough analysis and provide recommendations for the international governance of AI, reflecting the global effort to navigate the complexities of this rapidly advancing technology.
