Wayne Rooney accused some of his substitutes of falling short after Birmingham surrendered a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 against high-flying Ipswich at St Andrew’s. Rooney picked up his first point since becoming City manager but was denied his first win after the substitute Marcus Harness’s late double extended Ipswich’s unbeaten league run to 11 games. Jay Stansfield’s fifth goal of the season had given City a 13th-minute lead and it was followed by a Cameron Burgess own goal after 51 minutes. Rooney said: “Their subs made the difference and I felt ours didn’t. Some of the lads who came on didn’t do enough. The lads worked extremely hard to put us in the position we were in, and when you’re coming off the bench you need to be better than a few of them were.” Russell Martin praised Southampton’s bravery as Ryan Fraser was again their late hero at Millwall. The Saints have scored crucial injury-time goals in their last three away games with Fraser, who scored a last-gasp winner at Hull last month, sealing the spoils with a 93rd-minute strike. Martin’s side are now motoring but were made to wait for their fifth win in seven, peppering Bartosz Bialkowski’s goal but unable to get past the Pole until the last gasp. “The lads responded and stayed so brave,” said Martin. “We were relentless in attack and at the hour mark I thought: ‘We’ve got them,’ but their keeper made a few good saves and we couldn’t get the goal. Thankfully we got it right at the end and it’s a moment of composure. I’m really grateful for that and proud of the players.” Carlos Corberán was delighted with West Brom’s aggression in the 3-1 victory over their fellow playoff contenders Hull. Jed Wallace gave Albion the lead on 14 minutes before they were pegged back just before half-time by a Lewie Coyle strike. Matt Phillips and the substitute Semi Ajayi (pictured) netted in the second half to give the hosts all three points. Corberán said: “We were playing against one of the most competitive teams in the Championship and it was a massive defensive display.” Steven Schumacher praised the “outstanding” character of his Plymouth side as they fought back to draw 3-3 with Middlesbrough at Home Park. Goals from Bali Mumba, Finn Azaz and Morgan Whittaker cancelled out efforts from Josh Coburn (2) and one by Sam Greenwood. Coventry went down 3-2 at Preston for a fourth straight loss. Haji Wright gave City the lead, but Duane Holmes levelled for Preston before Alan Browne fired home from the spot after Kyle McFadzean was adjudged to have brought down Milutin Osmajic. Osmajic then gave Preston breathing room after 71 minutes, but Wright got his second seven minutes from time, leaving the home side sweating. Michael Duff said his Swansea players were “magnificent” after they hung on for a 0-0 draw with 10 men against Sunderland. A 30th-minute red card for Charlie Patino forced the Swans to launch a grim defensive operation but they took a point and it might even have been more had the striker Jamal Lowe not seen his penalty saved by Anthony Patterson on the stroke of half-time. Bristol City won 1-0 at home to Sheffield Wednesday. Rotherham drew 1-1 with QPR. Huddersfield played out a 0-0 draw with Watford, as did Stoke with Cardiff.
