Stephy Mavididi scored twice as Leicester cruised to a comfortable 4-0 win at home to Plymouth to remain top of the Championship. Mavididi opened the scoring from the penalty spot after 14 minutes before the Foxes scored three goals in a scintillating seven-minute spell after the break to take the game out of Argyle’s reach. Patson Daka doubled the lead with a cool finish after 49 minutes before Mavididi drilled home his second of the game three minutes later. Wilfred Ndidi completed the scoring in the 55th minute, finishing in off a post from Daka’s pass to ensure the Foxes remain one point clear at the top. Plymouth in contrast are winless in 10 league games on the road this season. A goal in each half earned Ipswich a 2-0 win over Middlesbrough to keep Kieran McKenna’s side on the tails of the leaders. Conor Chaplin’s eighth of the season nine minutes before half-time was followed by substitute Omari Hutchinson’s fine finish in the 67th minute to seal the points for McKenna’s side. The third win in a row keeps Ipswich a point behind Leicester, while Middlesbrough sit 12th and three points behind sixth place after a third defeat in four games. Leeds kept up the pressure on the top two with an impressive 2-0 win at Blackburn. In a test of their credentials against a vibrant home side, Daniel Farke’s men passed with flying colours, and a goal in each half did the damage. Dan James scored for the third game in succession to fire the visitors into a deserved lead and, with Blackburn searching for an equaliser, Crysencio Summerville’s dinked finish 15 minutes from time sealed the points. The victory is Leeds’ sixth in the last seven, while it was a fifth home defeat in seven for Blackburn. Anthony Musaba struck a 91st-minute winner as Sheffield Wednesday moved off the foot of the table with a 1-0 victory at Stoke, whose manager Alex Neil faced chants of “sacked in the morning”. Cameron Dawson was the Owls’ other hero, saving a second-half penalty from Ryan Mmaee as Wednesday extended their unbeaten run to three games. An equaliser from Watford substitute Rhys Healey six minutes into injury time rescued a 1-1 draw against Southampton at Vicarage Road. Introduced just 90 seconds earlier, Healey struck with a firm shot from the edge of the penalty area to maintain the Hornets’ impressive form. It had seemed that a Che Adams goal would be enough for Southampton to keep pace with the three sides above them in the table. Instead it means they are now 10 points adrift of the automatic promotion places. Sunderland held off West Brom to win 2-1 at the Stadium of Light. After Jobe Bellingham was denied a close-range opener in the first half by a dubious offside decision, the hosts went ahead on the 69th minute through Daniel Ballard’s header. Dan Neil capped a breakaway in the 84th minute with a tidy finish before Brandon Thomas-Asante set up a nervy finale. QPR’s resurgence under Martí Cifuentes continued as they beat Hull 2-0 to make it three wins in a row. The rejuvenated Chris Willock put the hosts ahead with his third goal in as many matches and Ilias Chair’s second-half finish sealed the victory. Rangers remain in the bottom three but have lost just one of their six matches since Cifuentes took over. Norwich were frustrated by a determined rearguard action from Preston as a hard-fought encounter at Carrow Road ended goalless. The visitors, who were on a run of three successive defeats, showed plenty of spirit against a Norwich side who had won three of their previous four games and just about deserved their share of the spoils. Norwich’s best chance came in the closing stages when substitute Liam Gibbs missed the target with a clear sight of goal. A late header by centre-back Dimitrios Goutas earned Cardiff a narrow 1-0 victory in a dire encounter against struggling Millwall. The Greece international pounced in the 78th minute to seal three points the Bluebirds scarcely deserved. It was a grim afternoon for Millwall who now have just one win in their last 10 league games and are sinking into a relegation battle under manager Joe Edwards, who replaced the sacked Gary Rowett in October. Bristol City travelled back to the west country with a point after a rain- and wind-swept 1-1 draw with Huddersfield. Delano Burgzorg opened the scoring for the hosts after a devastating first-half counterattack spearheaded by the impressive David Kasumu. Tommy Conway capped off a tidy move for the Robins straight after the break, slotting home Andreas Weimann’s precise cross to equalise. Huddersfield are now winless at home since October while City slip to three without victory. Rotherham academy product Jerry Yates came back to haunt his former club as he struck the winner in Swansea’s 2-1 victory. Defender Daniel Ayala was sent off for the Millers after 17 minutes and that changed the complexion of the game, with Swansea eventually taking full advantage to secure all three points.
