Assistant President of the Saudi Human Rights Commission (HRC) Zuhair Al-Zouman highlighted the unprecedented reforms and developments that the Kingdom has undergone in the realm of human rights since the adoption of Vision 2030. He emphasized that Saudi Arabia, under its wise leadership, has a proactive political will responsive to everything that would preserve human rights. He made the remarks while addressing a panel discussion titled “Human rights reforms and developments in Saudi Arabia,” organized by the Permanent Mission of the Gulf Cooperation Council to the United Nations on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Al-Zouman said that Saudi Arabia has achieved pioneering steps in several areas, including the rights of the elderly, people with disabilities, women, and children. He said that this was done by issuing regulations based on the human rights-based approach, including provisions that aimed to enhance and protect the rights of these groups. He also pointed out that the Kingdom has been working to develop its legislative system for human rights by reviewing, issuing, and amending various legislations, including those previously announced by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman. Al-Zouman stressed that human rights should always be the goal and not a means to achieve other goals that are out of context, and on this basis, efforts should be combined. “We should cooperate together to confront attempts of politicization and selectivity in applying human rights standards, calling for all rights to be given the same weight of focus and attention, in line with the complementarity and indivisibility of human rights,” he said. The HRC deputy chief expressed hope that the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights would contribute to putting an end to what is happening in Gaza, and pave the way for ending the suffering of the Palestinian people by establishing their independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital
