A man has appeared in court charged with murdering Daniel Anjorin, 14, with a samurai sword. Marcus Arduini Monzo appeared at Westminster magistrates court on Thursday morning, charged with the murder of the teenager in Hainault, east London. The teenager was on his way to school on Tuesday when he was attacked. He was a pupil at Bancroft’s school in east London. The attacks left four other people injured including two police officers. Monzo, 36, is also charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of grievous bodily harm, aggravated burglary and possession of a bladed article. The court was told by the prosecutor, and in the official documents listing the charges, that the weapon allegedly used was a samurai sword. Monzo is a dual Spanish-Brazilian national, listed as living in Newham, east London. The prosecutor David Burns told the court that Monzo first crashed a van into a fence in Laing Close, Hainault, just before 7am on Tuesday, striking a man. The court heard Monzo then got out of the van, and said that he would kill the man before slashing him around the neck area. For this Monzo is charged with attempted murder. The prosecutor told the court that Monzo then broke into a home close by in which a man and woman were asleep with their four-year-old daughter. The court was told that Monzo, after allegedly breaking in, went into a bedroom where the child’s father was attacked suffering wounds to the neck and arm. For the alleged attack, Monzo is charged with GBH. The attacks unfolded at the start of rush hour with people going to work and children heading to school. The prosecutor told the court that Monzo is then accused of running up behind Daniel. The teenager was allegedly slashed around his neck, the court heard, before he fell to the ground and was then stabbed in the chest on Laing Close. The court heard that police officers who arrived and tried to help the wounded teenager were set upon. It is alleged that Monzo appeared from a bush and the officers chased him. The court was told that Monzo at one point allegedly attacked a female Metropolitan police officer who was attacked with a sword while she lay on the ground. For the attack on the female officer, Monzo is charged with attempted murder, and for a sword attack on a male police inspector he is charged with GBH. Monzo spoke only to confirm his name and wore a grey sweatshirt and grey tracksuit bottoms. The chief magistrate, Paul Goldspring, remanded him in custody to appear at the central criminal court either on Friday 3 May or Tuesday 7 May. The Met has said that 22 minutes elapsed from the time it received the first call via the 999 emergency system to the suspect being detained.
