The letters about class snobbery and accents (12 August) reminded me of the shame I was made to feel when a rather superior nurse tutor told me that I would amount to nothing in my chosen career due to my Geordie accent. It took me years to shake off the embarrassment of speaking to groups of people. I am due to retire after 52 years in the NHS, several of them in senior management positions. I count birds in January, butterflies in July, wasps in August/September, and bumblebees once a month from March to October.
