That’s all from us! I’ll leave you with Andy Hunter’s match report. Enjoy the rest of your weekend! Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou tells Sky Sports: “It is a difficult result. We struggled to really get in the game in the first half and that gave Everton momentum. We gave ourselves a mountain to climb but the players certainly tried to claw the game back but we just fell short. “We couldn’t really take control of the game. We struggled to get any traction in terms of with and without the ball and that allowed them to get in behind us. We had some chances where we probably should have capitalised early on, but in the end it wasn’t enough. “We are pretty stretched. We literally had 11 players fit enough to start the game. We weren’t in total control of our organisation and Everton capitalised on that and we paid the price for it. Radu [Dragusin] had to come off because of the deep cut and restructure. “Second half we had the fair share of the game. We started strongly and I thought Richarlison made a difference and a presence and Mikey Moore gave us something on the left.” Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin tells Sky Sports: “Really pleased. It’s been a tough patch for myself so I’m really delighted with how it went today and I think just for us, the lads, the team and the club, we really needed a win today and I’m glad that I could play my part. I think everything clicked today.” Ipswich vs Manchester City is due to kick off in around 10 minutes. Be sure to join Dominic Booth for his minute-by-minute live blog: Here are the other results from this afternoon’s 2pm kick-offs… Nottingham Forest 3-2 Southampton Manchester United 1-3 Brighton Thanks Rob! What a game! Those two late goals from Tottenham might just be enough to save Ange Postegoclou’s job for now despite the loss. A few more minutes and they might’ve got a third. However, that disastrous first-half display let them down and they now remain 15th in the Premier League table, four points above Everton. I have to dash but Emillia Hawkins will cover any reaction to the three games. Bye! The updated Premier League table Full time: Everton 3-2 Spurs David Moyes gets the first win of his second spell at Everton. It was more nervous than it needed to be, but the result is all that matters right now. Full time: Nottm Forest 3-2 Southampton Forest move level on points with Arsenal after surviving a second-half fightback from the bottom club Southampton. 90+4 min Spence’s cross so nearly reaches Kulusevski beyond the far post. A defender, not sure who, had to stretch desperately to head the ball in the air. Moments later, Pickford runs out to grab the ball and elicit a huge cheer. Full time: Man Utd 1-3 Brighton Brighton – beautiful, brilliant Brighton – win at Old Trafford for the third season in a row! GOAL! Everton 3-2 Spurs (Richarlison 90+2) Richarlison scores against his old club! Theer’s no celebration, partly because he’s hurt himself. A left-wing corner was taken short to Moore, whose fantastic cross was slid in at the far post by Richarlison. Richarlison then slid into Pickford and limped back to the halfway line. He’ll be fine. 90+1 min Four minutes of added time. 90 min Mikey Moore has again impressed since coming on as sub. Spurs have got a player there. Ipswich v Man City The team news is in for this one – Dominic Booth has more. 88 min: Everton substitution Michael Keane replaces Jake O’Brien. 86 min Calvert-Lewin, who has been superb today, almost gets through on goal again. Kinsky flies off his line to punch the ball away. GOAL! Nottm Forest 3-2 Southampton (Onuachu 90+2) Surely not. Apparently there are 12 minutes of added time to be played. 84 min Plenty of Spurs pressure now. Moore’s cutback reaches Richarlison, whose first shot is blocked by Gueye. His second goes straight into Pickford’s loving embracee. 83 min “In 1967 Desmond Hackett wrote that if Chelsea reached the FA Cup final he would walk barefoot to Wembley,” says Peter Nockolds. “Tommy Docherty’s team duly battled through to the final against Spurs.” Not now Peter, I’m ordering a treadmill. 80 min That goal has given Tottenham fresh belief and the tempo of their passing has noticeably increased. Everton respond by bringing on Nathan Patterson for Iliman Ndiaye. GOAL! Everton 3-1 Tottenham (Kulusevski 77) A touch of the purest class from Dejan Kuluseveski. Pickford came out to meet Maddison near the byline, then Moore had a shot blocked and the ball ran to Kulusevski on the right side of the area. Pickford was out of the game but there were four Everton players in a line between him and the goal. Without breaking stride, Kulusevski teased a first-time chip over them all and into the net. That’s a delightful goal, reminiscent of George Best’s lob against Spurs in 1971. 76 min I hope the reporters who have to interview Ange Posteocglou after the game have done some eggshell training. Premier League latest Everton 3-0 Spurs Man Utd 1-3 Brighton Nottm Forest 3-1 Southampton 74 min “If things continue like this, we’ll have Crystal Palace, Brentford, Everton and Brighton all higher than Man U or Spurs in the table,” notes Kieran McIntosh. “Just bear in mind that two or three years ago, two of those sides were in the Championship and Man U were in the Champions League. And those two sides are the highest in the table of all mentioned here. Wild.” Good though isn’t it? Jeopardy makes the football world go round, or at least it should. When I was growing up the Big Five were Arsenal, Everton, Liverpool, Man Utd and Spurs; as things stand three of them are in the bottom eight. 73 min Maddison shoots over from 20 yards; apparently that was Spurs’ first attempt at goal since the 33rd minute. Spurs bring on Mikey Moore for Pape Sarr. 72 min “I can’t agree with George Solomon (63 min),” says Martin Gamage. “This Spurs team isn’t finishing mid-table, it’s going down. This will be 5 points from ten games; that’s relegation form.” I understand the frustration but give you head a wobble. If Spurs go down I’ll run/walk/wince the London Marathon for the next 10 years. 71 min Man Utd’s woes are another argument against changing the manager mid-season. If you bring in a coach who, well, coaches, it’s surely preferable to give them two months on the training ground before their first game. GOAL! Man Utd 1-3 Brighton (Rutter 76) For the second season in a row, Brighton lead 3-1 at Old Trafford! Georginio Rutter punishes a bit of a howler from Andre Onana, who spilled a fairly routine low cross from the right. 70 min: Everton substitution Ashley Young replaces Jesper Lindstrom, who gets a fine hand after a pretty good performance. 68 min Doucoure is booked for delaying a Spurs free-kick. 67 min “There is a lot of talk about Andoni Iraola being a potential Spurs manager,” says Mel Lynam. “My question would be why would he settle for Spurs? Surely with the way his stock is rising he can get much bigger jobs than that. Arsenal might be available before the end of the year; Arteta looks like a man who needs a break.” That’s a very fair point. You never know what will happen at Chelsea or Man Utd either, and Pep won’t be around forever. I’d love to take Bournemouth into Europe, win the Conference League next year and then assess his options. 66 min Spence goes over in the area after a shoulder barge from O’Brien (I think). Nothing doing. 63 min Most of you who have emailed in think Postecoglou should be sacked now. George Solomon sees it slightly differently. “Agree with you on Ange, it’s hard to know which way they should go. But what do they gain from sacking him now? They’ll finish mid-table either way, and he’s got them in a good position in the cups, which is ultimately what he’ll be judged on this season. Unless the players have stopped playing for him - which I don’t sense - I’d wait till the summer. Then I can see Kieran McKenna or Iraola heading there.” 61 min There are more goals out there for Everton because Spurs are totally deflated. Ndiaye moves into the area from the left and lays the ball back to Mykolenko, who sprays over. Kinsky’s goalkick is intercepted far too easily by O’Brien, who crosses towards Calvert-Lewin. He has far too much to space, barely six yards out, but shoots wide on the turn. That was an excellent chance. 59 min Maddison catches Ndiaye in the face with a stray arm. The referee settles for just a free-kick. 58 min “Moyes is good, isn’t he?” says Matt Dony. “Just imagine if he’d been given more time and money at United…” I’m sensing banter. GOAL! Man Utd 1-2 Brighton (Mitoma 60) This time it counts! Kaoru Mitoma, who made the first goal for Yankuba Minteh, has the favour returned. Matt O’Riley (I think) made a superb run through midfield and found Minteh on the right; his teasing, inswinging cross was poked in from about two yards by Mitoma at the far post. GOAL! Nottm Forest 3-1 Southampton (Bednarek 60) Jan Bednarek gives Southampton a snifter of hope. 53 min Calvert-Lewin, just inside the area, heads Lindstrom’s free-kick well wide. 53 min Nothing much is happening at Goodison. Davies goes through the back of Calvert-Lewin and is penalised; he might have been booked for that. 52 min If Spurs do sack Ange – and I still don’t think they should – who should they go for? I’ve thought for a while that Andoni Iraola is good enough for any club in the league. That said, I hope he stays at Bournemouth at least until the end of the season; they could make history. NO GOAL! Man Utd 1-1 Brighton VAR has harshed Joao Pedro’s buzz: apparently there was a foul in the build-up and the goal has been ruled out. 49 min “Ange, like Arteta has had his chance,” says Jeff Sax. “Time to go.” You might be right. But you’d have said the same about Alex Ferguson in 1989-90. P45s aren’t always the answer. I can see both sides! GOAL! Man Utd 1-2 Brighton (Joao Pedro 53) Joao Pedro, who scored a cracker in Brighton’s win at Old Trafford last season, has restored their lead. 47 min “The king of Fedoras,” begins Mike Firth, “was of course the legendary champagne-swilling cigar-chomping sheepskin coat-sporting Big Mal.” 46 min: Spurs begin the second half. Richarlison has come on for Radu Dragusin. The Sky pundits are saying Spurs played a back three in the first half; there was so much going on that I missed it. But they are definitely playing 4-2-3-1 now. Onto more important matters. Peter Reid’s hat. “The brim to big for a trilby I’d have said,” says Michael Wright. “A soft-rimmed fedora to my eyes.” I’ll take your word for it. Despite being a member of the bald community since my thirties, my head is so full of useless facts that no hats will fit. Half time: Everton 3-0 Spurs This might game have been tagged as the resistible force vs the movable object, given the performance of both teams this season. But Spurs are in a pretty dark place right now and Everton, who scored 15 goals in their first 20 league games, have put three past them in the first half. For all Spurs’ woes, Everton deserve plenty of credit. Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Iliman Ndiaye scored lovely goals before Archie Gray inadvertently made it three on the stroke of half-time. That goal summed up a horrible first half for Spurs. A corner on the right was half cleared and then swung beyond the far post. Tarkowski headed it back into the middle, Calvert-Lewin flicked it further across goal and Archie Gray roofed it from six yards. He and Dragusin went for the ball at the same time; I’m not sure whether Dragusin kicked it against Gray or whether Gray was the only one to make contact. Either way, it looked awful. GOAL! Everton 3-0 Tottenham (Gray og 45+8) A farcical own goal completes an awful first half for Spurs. 45+7 min Dragusin takes a risk by mauling Tarkowski’s shirt before the follow-up corner. Tarkowski goes down but the referee isn’t interested. 45+6 min: Chance for Everton! Lindstrom’s dipping free-kick from the right is met by the stooping Tarkowski, whose header hits the left thigh of Kinsky before bouncing safely. For him, that’s a really good chance. Half time: Man Utd 1-1 Brighton Yankuba Minteh scored early for Brighton; Bruno Fernandes equalised from the penalty spot. Half time: Nottm Forest 3-0 Southampton Elliot Anderson, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Chris Wood have put Forest in complete control. 45+6 min Spurs look bereft of confidence and purpose. Spence is lucky not to be booked for a bit of a hack at Lindstrom. 45+3 min Play resumes after a five-minute stoppage. 45+3 min Peter Reid, a magnificent footballer and even better human being, is in the crowd and sporting a spectacular blue… is that a trilby? Whatever it is, he looks like an enforcer in Boardwalk Empire. 45+1 min Dragusin is still being treated. He’s conscious but has a cut above the right eye that is being patched up. There will be seven minutes of added time. 44 min Dragusin is receiving treatment and looks a bit groggy. GOAL! Nottm Forest 3-0 Southampton (Wood 43) Chris Wood scores, of course he does. It’s a really good finish, a precise, flicked header from 12 yards after a cross from Ola Aina. 43 min Calvert-Lewin catches Dragusin with an elbow and is booked. It wasn’t deliberate but it was a fair old clout. 41 min “Spurs look like a Championship winning team that failed to pragmatically adjust their style to the Premier League,” says Joe Harvey. “Like Burnley or Leeds. Not a great sign.” I’d argue there’s plenty of evidence that their style works, but only when they have something close to their best XI. I suppose Big Ange would argue that if you compromise your style in short term, you delay long-term progress; the counter-argument usually comes in the form of a P45. 40 min Bergvall shoves Calvert-Lewin over and is booked. Nottm Forest 2-0 Southampton Long way to go and all, but as things stand Forest have a six-point Champions League cushion. Just imagine the atmosphere at the City Ground if they play European football next year. 38 min Everton have been comfortable since Ndiaye’s goal. Spurs will argue they should have had a penalty just before that, which would have made it 1-1. Even so, their defending hasn’t been great – as good as Ndiaye’s goal was, I’m not sure he’d have got past Cristian Romero. Not with the ball anyway. 36 min The last time Everton scored two goals in a game was before records began against Wolves in early December. I still think Spurs should hold their nerve with Ange Postecoglou but you have to fear for his job prospects now. 33 min Bergvall shoots over from 22 yards. Spurs look a bit stunned. GOAL! Nottm Forest 2-0 Southampton (Hudson-Odoi 28) Nottingham Forest’s greatest season in decades is continuing at the City Ground. Southampton farted around at the back and lost the ball; Callum Hudson-Odoi punished them with a precise shot from the edge of the D. That was a quite exhilarating goal. Ndiaye collected the ball just past the halfway line and ran straight at a backpedalling defence. He beat Dragusin on the edge of the area with an elegant, borderline erotic hip-wiggle and lifted the ball emphatically over Kinsky. GOAL! Everton 2-0 Spurs (Ndiaye 30) Hello! Iliman Ndiaye has given Everton a two-goal lead with a majestic goal! 28 min Just after that Pickford save, Son went over in the area after a clumsy challenge from behind by Branthwaite. The referee waved on and VAR filed it under Referee’s Call. I think Everton are a bit lucky there – certainly, as Jamie Carragher says on Sky, had a penalty been given it wouldn’t have been overturned. 27 min Son’s shot from a tight angle is well blocked by Pickford at the near post. 26 min: Ndiaye hits the post! That’s a brilliant reaction save from Kinsky, who plunges to his left to fingertip Ndiaye’s first-time onto the post. 25 min: An even better chance for Calvert-Lewin! Everton should be 2-0 up. Calvert-Lewin broke beyond the Spurs defence, who were close to the halfway line as usual, and had all the time in the world to control Branthwaite’s crossfield pass. Probably too much: his second touch was awful and allowed Kinsky to dive at his feet. GOAL! Man Utd 1-1 Brighton (Fernandes 23 pen) Bruno Fernandes has equalised from the spot at Old Trafford. It stemmed from another Amad press, with the ball falling to Zirkzee in the area. He was pulled back by Baleba and Fernandes did the necessary. Baleba might have been sent off as I don’t think he was trying to play the ball.24 min: Great chance for Son! Spurs are starting to fire up the passing carousel. Kulusevski spins cleverly behind Gueye and squares the ball across the area to Son, whose tame sidefoot is too close to Pickford. It was still a good save but an in-form Son would have buried it. 22 min Son’s deep, inswinging corner is clawed away awkwardly but effectively by Pickford. Moments later Spence has a fierce shot from distance that is blocked. 21 min Everton have kept Maddison and Kulusevski very quiet so far. Spurs’ liveliest attacker has arguably been Spence, who has just won another corner on the left. 18 min: Great defending Son breaks into the area and is about to shoot when Tarkowski makes a brilliant last-ditch challenge. 15 min Apparently there may have been a handball in the build up to the goal, although VAR can’t intervene unless the goalscorer is involved. Calvert-Lewin received a short pass from Gueye on the edge of the area and suddenly turned into Lionel Messi. He twisted Gray one way and then the other, sent Davies for a hot dog, gave Kinksy the eyes and slid the ball past him at the near post. That’s a brilliant goal. GOAL! Everton 1-0 Tottenham (Calvert-Lewin 13) That’ll get the crowd going: Dominic Calvert-Lewin has scored a lovely goal! GOAL! Nottm Forest 1-0 Southampton (Anderson 12) Elliot Anderson has given Forest the lead with an excellent goal, his first for the club. He surged forward from midfield and crashed a low shot from 20 yards that beat the diving Ramsdale to his right. Meanwhile… 11 min Ndiaye has a long-range shot blocked. 10 min It’s been a low-key start to the game – the intensity isn’t great and the crowd are surprisingly flat. I’m sure that will change once it gets going. 9 min There’s a two-minute delay because one of the assistant referees has done one down the tunnel. I assumed it was a call of nature but apparenly there was an issue with his communication. Either way, he’s back now. 7 min Lindstrom pings a sweet shot across goal from 25 yards. Kinsky dives to his right to push it behind for a corner; that’s a pretty good save. GOAL! Man Utd 0-1 Brighton (Minteh 5) Another false start for Manchester United, who have fallen behind to a goal from Yankuba Minteh. It was made by Kaoru Mitoma, who made a terrific run in behind Mazraoui, onto a superb long pass from Carlos Baleba, and passed the ball across the area to give Minteh a simple finish. 5 min Branthwaite moves forward with confidence and finds Mykolenko on the left. His cross is headed away at the near post. 3 min Spence wins the ball off O’Brien in a dangerous area and crosses early towards Son. Mangala reads the play and slides in to concede a corner. 2 min Spurs have started with Archie Gray in midfield, Son Heung-min up front and James Maddison playing from the left. 1 min Peep peep! We’re underway at Goodison Park. Man Utd legends pay trbute to Denis Law Sir Alex Ferguson, a tearful Paddy Crerand, Alex Stepney, Brian Kidd and others are on the field at Old Trafford to pay tribute to Denis Law, the greatest centre-forward in the history of Manchester United and arguably British football. “Hello Rob,” writes Kári Tulinius. “On a weekend where the other faces in the Premier League’s Rogue’s Gallery of Frustrating Forwards all scored, Núñez, Traoré and Havertz, it probably exemplifies Timo Werner’s poor luck that he’s out injured. He was bound to score a hat trick today.” Is Dominic Calvert-Lewin a member of that club yet? A reminder of the teams in our main game Everton (4-2-3-1) Pickford; O’Brien, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Mangala, Gueye; Lindstrom, Doucoure, Ndiaye; Calvert-Lewin. Substitutes: Virginia, Begovic, Patterson, Keane, Harrison, Beto, Young, Armstrong, Sherif. Tottenham Hotspur (possible 4-3-3) Kinsky; Porro, Dragusin, Davies, Spence; Bergvall, Gray, Sarr; Kulusevski, Son, Maddison. Substitutes: Austin, Reguilon, Richarlison, Yang, Lankshear, Moore, Olusesi, Hardy, Ajayi. Referee Darren England. It’s a bland old team to support “Truth be told, there wasn’t much different on Wednesday under Moyes than in most games this season,” writes Gary Naylor. “One mistake, one moment of competence from the opposition and a defeat. “I really want to see some evidence that the players have some plans to create chances from corners, free kicks and throw-ins today. For a team lacking pace and confidence, they’re the best routes to making chances. We can’t have players standing still looking at each other while the taker wonders what to do. Happened too often vs Villa.” Ange Postecoglou said Dominic Solanke injured his knee in training, which sounds ominous. He didn’t reveal their set-up but said the returning Ben Davies probably won’t be able to play 90 minutes. “On the subject of injuries Manchester United had the most injuries last season with 45 separate player injuries,” says Rick Harris, “but Spurs topped the table for most individual players injured (22) although seven other clubs including United, Liverpool, Newcastle, Brighton, Aston Villa and Chelsea had either 21 or 20 individual players injured. “Top of the table for total days lost to injury by a distance was Newcastle United with 1950. Last season was 19% more injury affected than 2022/23 and the highest level of injuries recorded in the PL era. I think the current Spurs injury situation while not great is not yet as bad as last season.” I was referring to quality of player and variety of positions rather than quantity. That said, I’m sure there have been worse – I remember Man Utd had a stinking injury list around December 2009, as did Arsenal at various stages of their Double-winning season in 2001-02. But Spurs are without at least six of their best XI, arguably eight. The Premier League table at the start of play This is a cracking read on an underrated player who marked one of the all-time greats out of a Champions League final Read Max Rushden on Big Ange A lot of Premier League fans and pundits are quick to dismiss his achievements elsewhere. The A-League, the J-League, Scotland. If anything, the Scottish Premiership is a bit of an outlier compared to his previous successes. The Sydney Morning Herald sports reporter Vince Rugari wrote Angeball: The definitive biography of Ange Postecoglou. “Celtic is the only time he’s clearly had the best/richest team in the league,” he says. “In every job he’s had he’s faced exactly the same questions/criticisms as he is now: he must adapt, it won’t work at this level, he’s naive, been found out, no plan B. Every time he’s proved that sort of narrative totally wrong. The Spurs injured XI (4-2-3-1) Vicario; Token right-back, Romero, van de Ven, Udogie; Bissouma, Bentancur; Johnson, Odobert, Werner; Solanke. That’s about as bad an injury list as I can recall in the Premier League era. Man Utd v Brighton team news Man Utd (3-4-2-1) Onana; Yoro, Maguire, de Ligt; Mazraoui, Ugarte, Mainoo, Dalot; Diallo, Fernandes; Zirkzee. Jake O’Brien and Jesper Lindstrom replace Ashley Young and Jack Harrison. Spurs are without Dominic Solanke, Yves Bissouma and Brennan Johnson. Ben Davies and James Maddison return to the starting XI. I’ve no idea who is playing where. Djed Spence on the left wing? Maddison as a false nine? Maddison playing from the left with Son up front? Everton (4-2-3-1) Pickford; O’Brien, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Mangala, Gueye; Lindstrom, Doucoure, Ndiaye; Calvert-Lewin. Referee Darren England. “Wonder if, once Postecoglou and Moyes take their place on the touchline, they’ll share a grim, understanding look at each other about derbies,” says Kieran McKintosh. “Postecoglou having just come off worse from one, and Moyes just about to go into an even bigger one. Moyes in the dugout for the final derby at Goodison Park will make for some cracking nostalgia, though.” I fully expect Tim Cahill and Andy Johnson to sign temporary deals, just for that game. Before the game against Brighton, Manchester United will pay tribute to one of the most coruscating and charismatic strikers ever to walk the earth. Preamble Hello and welcome to live coverage of Everton v Tottenham Hotspur at Goodison Park. Once upon a time these two clubs were part of England’s Big Five. Right now, even though Spurs are usually included among the Big Six, they and Everton are in the actual bottom six. While there are mitigating circumstances, most notably Spurs’ grotesque injury list, this is not what either club had in mind. Everton are in another relegation battle; Spurs have redefined the concept of Spursiness by dropping to 15th place while also being arguably the most exciting team in the country. Styles make fights, and Everton (goals for 15, against 26) and Spurs (F43, A32) could barely be more different. Let’s hope it makes for a cracker. We’ll also have goal updates from the other games, Manchester United v Brighton & Hove Albion and Nottingham Forest v Southampton. But Everton v Spurs will be our main focus, mainly because it’s the only match that is actually being televised in the UK. Kick off 2pm.
