Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri announced his resignation on Saturday, slamming Hezbollah and its main backer Iran, over their role in Lebanon and the region’s countries. In a televised statement, Hariri said that Iran and its followers “will lose in their meddling in the affairs of the Arab nation.” He warned: "Irans arms in the region will be cut off." Creating “divisions and targeting Arab security via Lebanon …. is unacceptable,” Hariri said in his resignation announcement. He accused Hezbollah of imposing a status quo in Lebanon through its weapons but stressed that the country would "rise as it had done in the past." He also hoped Lebanon would be able to overcome political influence exerted by internal and external forces. "Lebanon is a great country, governed by laws and protected by one Army. I thank all those who worked with me and placed their trust in me," he said. He added the countrys climate resembles that before the Feb. 2005 assassination of his father Rafik Hariri, adding that he senses a "plot to target his life." Hariri was appointed prime minister in late 2016 and headed a 30-member cabinet that included Hezbollah. His resignation is expected to raise tensions in the country. Mustafa Alloush, a politician from Hariri’s al-Mustaqbal movement, said the premier’s move came after his failure to bring Hezbollah to its senses.
