Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Jaber al-Sabah held talks on Monday with Arab League chief Ahmed Abul Gheit on foreign meddling in Arab affairs. An informed diplomatic source told Asharq Al-Awsat that the meeting tackled the emergency Arab League ministerial meeting that is scheduled for Sunday. The meeting was called for by Saudi Arabia in order to address Iranian interference in the Arab region. Sheikh Sabah and Abul Gheit also discussed the latest developments in the Palestinian territories and efforts to build on the recent settlement signed between the rival Hamas and Fatah factions. Abul Gheit’s official spokesman Mahmoud Afifi said in a statement on Monday that the Kuwait meeting covered efforts to preserve the security and stability of the Arab region, amid the mounting challenges and threats it faces. They also tackled the conflict in Syria, Libya and Yemen. The two officials stressed the need to preserve unity and internal cohesion to confront foreign meddling, added Afifi. “The Emir of Kuwait underlined the central role the Arab League can play during this important phase, stressing his and Kuwait’s backing of the work of the League chief,” he continued. For his part, Abul Gheit expressed his appreciation for the role Kuwait is playing in backing joint Arab work in various political, social, economic and humanitarian fields. This is embodied in its hosting on November 12 and 13 of the international conference on the Palestinian children’s rights.
