The Tunisian Defense Ministry announced on Wednesday that the military killed a “terrorist” during an operation in the Kasserine region. A ministry spokesman told Agence France Presse that the operation in the central western region was still ongoing. He said that no one from the army was injured in the operation, the details of which were not disclosed. The army and security forces have for years been carrying out operations against extremist armed groups that are fortified in mountainous regions in Tunisia, especially Kasserine that is close to the Algerian border. These groups often pledge their allegiance to al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb or ISIS. Extremist attacks since the 2011 Tunisian revolt have left dozens of people dead, including soldiers, civilians and tourists.
