Francisco Madeira, Head of the African Union Mission in Somalia, warned Saturday that the withdrawal of troops at the end of its set period year 2020 might waste any progress made so far. Madeira said the world must "fast-track" to meet the 2020 goal of peace. Peace in Somalia remains unstable, as al-Shabab, a group affiliated with the al-Qaeda terrorist network, continues to launch attacks. The AU mission has struggled to maintain stable funding, as only 40 percent of its overall budget is funded by its member states. The rest of balance is financed by international donors. The European Union, one of the main donors to the mission, reduced its financial support to Somalia in 2016, citing priorities elsewhere in Africa and around the world. "The UN and other partners must understand that this enterprise needs additional resources," Madeira said in statements quoted by DPA.
