Researchers have discovered a 100 million year old spider with a tail in an amber. This newly discovered creature differs from all the known living spider species, according to researchers from the University of Kansas. The new spider is 2.5 millimeters long, and compared to the other types of spiders, it is quite small without the three millimeters long tail, according to German news agency (DPA). The discovered spider has been named “Chimerarachne yingi”, the researchers wrote in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution. The amber in which the spider was discovered comes from Myanmar. Since the area where the spider was found is not the area of its origin, researchers do not rule out the existence of other spiders from the same specie that may still live in Myanmar. Paul Selden of the University of Kansas said: “We have not found it yet, but some of these wild insects have been well studied. It is a fine small creature." The researchers do not know much about the life of the spider. Selden added: "We can only speculate that it lived on or near the trees," pointing out that the animal was found in the amber stone, originally composed of gum. The researchers suggest that this type of spider lived under bark or between algae. Although the spider is capable of making silk threads, researchers are unsure whether it has made its own houses.
