Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that the recent Israelis air strikes carried out in Syria, including against Iranian targets, were a “heavy blow” to Iran’s forces in the war-torn country. "We inflicted on Saturday a heavy blow to Iranian and Syrian forces," Netanyahu said at the start of Sundays cabinet meeting. "We made clear to everyone that our rules of engagement will not change in any way. We will continue to harm anyone who tries to harm us. This was our policy and this will remain our policy." Saturday’s raids came after an Israeli F16 fighter was shot down by Syrian air defenses. Other Israeli ministers spoke of refusing to accept Iran entrenching itself militarily in Syria, as Netanyahu has said repeatedly. While several analysts said they did not expect a further escalation in the coming days, some spoke of the possibility of the Syrian war entering a new phase. Saturdays events began with Israel shooting down an Iranian drone that had entered Israeli airspace from Syria. On Sunday, Israeli military spokesman Jonathan Conricus alleged the drone was a copy of a US model captured by Iran in 2011. He said the conclusion was made from an analysis of the drones debris. Conricus warned on Saturday that Syria and Iran were "playing with fire.” "This is the most blatant and severe Iranian violation of Israeli sovereignty" in recent years, Conricus said. Amos Yadlin, a former Israeli Air Force pilot who leads the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv, said that Israel showed intelligence superiority in striking Iranian forces, and air supremacy in destroying Syrian air-defense installations. “There are uncertainties, surprises and mistakes in every battle that come with a cost,” he wrote. Maj. Gen. Yoel Strick, chief of Northern Command, also said that Iran is seeking to establish a "forward command post in Syria" and that Israel cannot allow it. He warned that "whoever crosses the line will get the appropriate response."
