Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, will embark on Sunday on a three-day visit to Egypt. Talks with officials in Cairo will discuss urgent regional issues, mainly Syria, Yemen, Palestine, Lebanon, Libya and the reconstruction of Iraq. Combating terrorism and extremist organizations will also figure in the talks between Egyptian officials and the Crown Prince. Former Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammed al-Araby described as “special and important” Prince Mohammed’s visit. It comes at a time when the Arab world is anticipating the stances of the two major Arab regional players of Saudi Arabia and Egypt on various developments, most notably in wake of the ongoing meddling in Arab affairs, he remarked. Aide to the former FM, Sayyed al-Masry told Asharq Al-Awsat that Prince Mohammed’s visit is significant because it precedes the Arab summit that is hosted by Saudi Arabia and which is scheduled for late March. Saudi-Egyptian coordination will help direct the agendas of the upcoming Arab meetings, he explained. “The Crown Prince’s meetings in Cairo will tackle the latest regional developments, in addition to combating terrorism, especially since Saudi Arabia and Egypt are the two states that are most affected by terror,” Egyptian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Nasser Hamdi told Asharq Al-Awsat on Sunday in a telephone call from Cairo. Hamdi said the meeting between Crown Prince Mohammed and Egyptian officials “provide a chance to promote closer coordination and discussions concerning combating terrorism, particularly considering that the security situation of Cairo is achieved through the security of Riyadh and vice versa.” The Crown Prince will meet President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi in his fourth trip to Cairo in the past two years. The visit comes weeks prior to Egypt’s presidential election in which Sisi is seeking a second term. On Saturday, Crown Prince Mohammed received Lebanon’s Prime Minister Saad Hariri in Riyadh. The two men discussed the developments in the region and bilateral relations between their two countries.
