Saudi Arabia strongly condemned on Tuesday the chemical attack in the Syrian town of Douma in the rebel-held Eastern Ghouta enclave, reported the Saudi Press Agency. The Saudi cabinet reiterated calls to stop the atrocities committed against the Syrian people, urging the international community to assume its responsibilities and protect the civilians. Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz presided over the cabinet session in Riyadh. The gatherers also called for adopting a peaceful solution to the crisis based on the Geneva I declaration and United Nations Security Council resolution 2254. The cabinet then addressed the latest regional and international developments, highlighting the letter the permanent Saudi envoy to the UN sent to the Security Council over the ongoing violations committed by the Iranian-backed Houthi militias. The latest of these violations was last week’s failed attack against a Saudi oil tanker in the territorial waters west of the Hodeidah port off the Yemeni coast. Saudi Arabia demanded that the militias and their Iranian sponsors be held responsible for their crimes that violate international laws. The Hodeidah port must be placed under international control to prevent the smuggling of arms to the Houthis. These weapons threaten international marine navigation and international trade routes in the Mandeb Strait and Red Sea. Addressing the developments in the Palestinian territories, the Saudi cabinet condemned the ongoing Israeli violations at the Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem and against the people in Gaza and other Palestinian regions. It reiterated the Kingdom’s constant stance from the Palestinian cause in backing the people’s demand to obtain their legitimate rights, starting with the establishment of an independent state whose capital is Jerusalem and according to the 2002 Arab peace initiative. The cabinet then reviewed the recent visit paid by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, to the United States. The ministers expressed the Kingdom’s gratitude to the warm welcome extended by President Donald Trump and his administration to the Crown Prince and the accompanying delegation. They stressed that the talks and discussions held in the US will help deepen and strengthen the historic and strategic ties enjoyed between Riyadh and Washington. The cabinet also said that it looks forward to the results of the official visit the Crown Prince is paying to France, where he has met with President Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian and numerous other officials.
