The Arab League stressed on Tuesday the importance of reaching a comprehensive vision to tackle the refugee crisis. The vision would focus on resolving the root causes of displacement through finding peaceful solutions to regional crises and preparing suitable conditions for the dignified return of refugees to their homeland. During a meeting on immigration and refugees, member-state representatives stressed the importance of the international community assuming its responsibilities towards refugees and the countries hosting them. This should be based on the concept of joint responsibility and sharing burdens among various active parties in the international community, the gatherers said in a statement. They were meeting on the occasion of World Refugee Day, which falls on June 20. The members also called on the international community to continue its support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in a way that allows it to bear its full responsibility towards the refugees according to related UN resolutions. The statement highlighted the need to take into consideration Palestinian refugees, who have been displaced since 1948 with Israel’s creation. In addition, the gatherers stressed the need for international donors to commit to providing long-term development aid that would support the economy of and development plans in host countries. The refugees and host countries alike will benefit from such aid that would achieve social stability, they noted. The statement lauded the continuous efforts exerted by Arab states and their contributions since the exacerbation of the refugee crisis in 2011, highlighting their hosting of large numbers of refugees or providing humanitarian aid through various donor conferences.
