A recently published Egyptian report showed that 15 terrorist attacks were carried out in seven different countries, by five different terrorist groups, and had left 95 dead and 154 injured during the second week of August 2018. With four terrorist operations, two of which were carried out by the Taliban and two by ISIS, Afghanistan lost 47 victims to terrorism and 110 were left wounded. Spurred by the Taliban-launched ‘trench’ operations in April, Afghanistan is witnessing a fierce power struggle between ISIS and the Taliban. In light of fierce competition between the Taliban and ISIS to acquire more territory in Afghanistan. Afghanistan tops the list of countries most prone to violence and extremism. Despite its security strife, the country is preparing for parliamentary elections next October. Iraq came in second place on the index of the countries most exposed to terrorist operations during the monitoring period. After successes achieved by Iraqi security forces in 2017, which forced a dramatic ISIS retreat, the terror group sought taking advantage of Iraq’s sectarian conflicts and the deterioration of economic and social conditions to rearrange its ranks. The observatory’s report added that Syria came in third, with two ISIS attacks killing 18 people and wounding 15. Syria is experiencing a bloody wave of violence, the report added. Yemen came in fourth place with Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) carrying out an armed attack and another car bomb against Yemeni security forces in the southern city of Abyan, killing four people and wounding seven. Nigeria came in fifth place with the terror group Boko Haram carrying out an attack on a village near Maiduguri in northeastern Nigeria. The group beheaded seven people and set fire to the village.
