Algeria’s National Commission for Dialogue and Mediation submitted a request to President Abdelkader Bensalah to dismiss the government as part of the truce measures demanded by the majority of Algerians, announced Commission’s coordinator Karim Younes. Speaking at a press conference Thursday, Younis expressed his optimism in meeting the truce measures, reiterating his adherence to the demands the Commission earlier raised. “We expect a positive reaction of the authority regarding our demands, which reflect the opinion of the majority of Algerians. We are using all the available possibilities and waiting to meet the ambitions of Algerians to calm the situation,” according to the coordinator. Younes reiterated that the members of the National Commission do not represent the popular movement, but themselves. He pointed out that university students have the right to reject dialogue, but not all students are against the pursuit of dialogue. During the upcoming days, the Wise Committee would be installed and a comprehensive dialogue will be launched to reach a consensual solution to solve the crisis, said Younes. He added that they are currently preparing for a national symposium which will lead to the formation of a presidential election committee. The national symposium will determine the date of the election. Chairman of the Political Committee of the National Commission for Dialogue and Mediation, Ammar Belhimer, asserted that the Commission does not have the right to interfere in the justice and comment on the provisions of the cases under investigation. He also announced the Commission’s rejection of the transitional formation stage and the application of the Libyan model in Algeria. Commission member Fatiha Benabbou called for referring to the constitution to implement articles 7 and 8, which grant people the right to choose their representatives through polls. She also said that the role of the commission members is to listen to the people’s and submit their demands to the national symposium. Meanwhile, Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Ahmed Gaid Salah reiterated the militarys commitment to the constitutional solution to the crisis in the country. Speaking at the first military area headquarters, south of Algeria, Salah asserted that the constitution is the guarantee to preserve the state, asserting that dialogue can provide solutions. He also stressed that the army has no political ambitions except serving the country and ensuring its security and stability. He revealed that the armys high command has confirmed information about plots against Algeria that exploit the current situation in the country to impose their own agendas. The Lieutenant warned against constitutional vacuum, pointing out that dialogue must be managed by national loyal figures who really believe in the dialogue and are willing to work to ensure its success. Further, Salah praised the efforts of the National Mediation and Dialogue in its endeavor, which he described as “noble” while criticizing some small groups linked to the “gang,” referring to former officials, who raise suspicious slogans and appeals and insist on rejecting all initiatives and results achieved.
