Dr. Shabab Al-Ghamdi has been secretary-general of the Council of Cooperative Health Insurance since January 2019. Previously, he was general manager of the Medical Services Purchasing Department at the Ministry of Health between 2017 and 2018. He worked as an adviser to the ministry between 2016 and 2017. Al-Ghamdi spent more than 16 years working at Saudi Aramco’s medical section in various positions, such as medical director of the Saudi Aramco Medical Services Organization. He began his career in Aramco in 1998 as a physician in the city of Dhahran. He was a family physician and quality improvement physician from 2002 to 2005. Al-Ghamdi holds a bachelor’s degree in medicine, specializing in surgery, from King Saud University. He received the ACPE accreditation from the American College of Physician Executives. He completed his Family Medicine Residency Program, and was certified as a family physician by Canada’s College of Family Physicians in 2002. Recently, a delegation from the Council of Cooperative Health Insurance visited the Department of Health in Abu Dhabi to discuss ways to enhance cooperation. Al-Ghamdi said the visit was part of the council’s strategy to develop the health insurance system in the private sector.
