Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan said on Tuesday that the four countries that are boycotting Qatar will continue to support the efforts of Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Jaber al-Sabah to resolve the dispute. Speaking at the conclusion of the 40th Gulf Cooperation Council summit that was held in Riyadh, he said: “The leaders have stressed the importance of the unity of the council.” Gulf unity is firm, he stressed, while highlighting Iran’s threat, “which targets all Gulf states.” He urged Tehran “to change its behavior before calling for peace,” adding that it was difficult for it to be part of the security system in the region.” Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt began a diplomatic and economic boycott of Qatar in June 2017 over its support and financing of terrorism. GCC Secretary General Dr. Abdullatif Al-Zayani said that the summit reflected the “depth of fraternal relations and historic ties that bind the council members.” It reflects a “sincere desire to deepen cooperation and cohesion in various fields,” he went on to say. He said that the Gulf countries will stand united against any threat, hailing the efforts of the Emir of Kuwait in “healing the rift that emerged between member states.” “The council has expressed its support to these efforts,” Zayani added. The GCC summit called for greater regional economic integration as the meeting chaired by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz. The final statement called for finalizing legislation for financial and monetary unity by 2025, according to the meetings final communique. It also called for boosting military and security cooperation to maintain regional security. The 41st GCC summit will be held by Bahrain.
