DUBAI: With coronavirus cases rising to over 11 million around the world, a number of film and fashion events have been forced to become digital. This week, the first-ever online Paris Haute Couture Week kicked off, with Lebanese designers Georges Hobeika and Rabih Kayrouz presenting their brand’s Fall 20/21 couture collections on July 6. From heavily-embellished tops to voluminous skirts and fluffy coats, Hobeika’s audience-less runway show, which was streamed via Instagram Live, had it all. The Baskinta-born designer, revered by royals and red carpet stars, also offered brides-to-be something to dream about. He presented a white gown decorated with crystals and sequins and a floor-length veil that would make any bride say “I do.” For Kayrouz, this digital experience was a golden chance for him to showcase his creativity. The couturier presented a short film, titled “320 / 38,” that was written, directed and produced by Lebanese filmmaker Nasri Sayegh. The title of the video gives reference to his Beirut address, 320, and his Paris atelier, 38. In a five-minute long clip, the couturier took viewers on a dress-making journey – with background music by the late legendary Egyptian singer Shadia – where he opted to focus on a single haute couture orange dress that took 230 hours to make. The sleeveless dress, tight at the model’s upper body, is made from ribbons that intersect in different geometric lines. The gown then flows into a full skirt with even, undulating pleats.
