RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has donated $3.5 million to two initiatives of the United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to support the peaceful use of the nuclear technology, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported. Of the total donation, $2.5 million was dedicated towards an initiative to modernize the agencys Seibersdorf laboratories (ReNuAL2). The initiative will contribute to strengthening the nuclear regulatory capabilities to maximize the benefit from nuclear techniques and provide resources and services to IAEA member states that ensure the safe use of nuclear technology, said SPA. The remaining $1 million was donated to support the IAEAs Zoonotic Diseases Integrated Action (ZODIAC), which aims to implement nuclear technologies to combat outbreaks of infectious zoonotic diseases and enhance preparedness, response, and early detection. “The donations are part of Saudi Arabia’s continuous support for IAEA initiatives that aim to develop capabilities in a manner that enhances its vital role in harnessing atomic energy for peace,” said SPA. The financial contribution also confirms the Kingdoms positive stance towards the use of safe nuclear energy, read the statement.
