OIC Chief Concludes Contacts with European and NATO Officials

Brussels, Rajab 16, 1432, Jun 18, 2011, SPA - The Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, concluded a series of contacts and consultations lasting two days, with a number of senior officials in the European Union and NATO. He met President of The European Council, Herman Van Rompuy and the President of European Commission, President Jose Manuel Barroso and discussed with them the relations between the institutions of the European Union and the Organization of Islamic Conference. During these contacts, a decision was taken to open a representative office official in Brussels. The two parties agreed to strengthen coordination between the EU and the Organization of Islamic Conference on several issues as regards regional politics and international affairs and about the Muslim presence in the European continent in general. A source at the European Commission said that the situation in Libya and the Middle East and developments in North Africa accounted for some of the themes of the talks. Meanwhile, the OIC Secretary General's meeting with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen focused mainly on developments of the Libyan crisis and what the international and regional organizations can do to reduce the sufferings of the civilians in Libya and bring about an end to the crisis.
