GROZNY, September 12, SPA -- A suicide bomber detonated explosives near police on patrol in the capital of Chechnya Saturday, wounding three officers, emergency and law enforcement officials said. The early-morning blast near a school in Grozny was thesecond suicide bombing reported by authorities in the North Caucasus in less than 24 hours, according to a report of the Associated Press. Two of the officers hospitalized after Saturday's bombingwere severely wounded, regional Emergency SituationsMinistry spokesman Marat Prokopenkov said. Chechen InteriorMinister Ruslan Alkhanov said the bomber detonated theexplosives as the police were trying to detain him, andpolice at the scene initially said it appeared threeofficers were killed. In Ingushetia, which borders Chechnya to the west, acivilian died from wounds suffered in a suicide bombingthat injured four police and security officers Friday at acheckpoint on the outskirts of the province's main city,Nazran, Interior Ministry spokeswoman Madina Khadziyevasaid Saturday. In Dagestan, east of Chechnya, security forces besieged ahome early Saturday and killed four alleged militants,including a woman, the provincial Interior Ministry said.
