United Nations, March 17, SPA -- The head of the United Nations agency responsible for promoting press freedom on Monday condemned last week’s suicide attack in Baghdad that killed 33 people, including two journalists. “I condemn the attack,” said Koichiro Matsuura, director general of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. “Such indiscriminate killings are contrary to every law. Two journalists, Haider Hashim and Suhaib Adnan, were among the victims of this attack. I must, once again, urge the authorities to improve the safety of journalists, a profession of brave men and women whose work is important for society as a whole,” he said. Almost 300 Iraqi journalists have been killed in the country since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, according to the Iraqi Journalists’ Syndicate. The two journalists who were killed were working for the Cairo-based Al-Baghdadia satellite channel. Another journalist, Ibrahim al-Katib, correspondent with the state-run Al-Iraqiya TV, was seriously injured in the attack and remains in critical condition according to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/645187
