Talks on North Korean nuclear program begin two-day recess

BEIJING, September 30, SPA -- Six-nation talks on ending North Korean nuclear programs will take a two day break whileparticipants consider a draft statement on shutting downthe North's nuclear installations, the chief Chinese envoyto talks said Sunday. Wu Dawei said the document was being kept private untilthe governments of North Korea, China, Japan, Russia, theUnited States and South Korea have had time to consider it. Talks were to reconvene later in the week in Beijing. Negotiators have been trying to push forward a Februaryagreement under which the countries agreed to provide NorthKorea with 1 million tons of heavy fuel oil, or themonetary equivalent in other aid and assistance. In return, North Korea agreed to shut down its mainnuclear reactor, which it did in July, and declare andultimately dismantle all its nuclear programs, the Associated Press reported.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/486921
