Tribal clash kills 6 in India's remote northeast

GAUHATI, India, November 24, SPA -- Marchers representing tea plantation workers in India's remote northeast clashed with area residents Saturday, killing six people and injuring 60others, police said. A group of nearly 10,000 workers from tea plantations allover the state of Assam, led by the All Assam Tea TribesStudents Association, had been marching in state capitalGauhati to demand that the government recognize them as aseparate tribal group. Clashes erupted with the marchers pelted shops andvehicles with stones, witnesses said, adding that policeopened fire to quell the violence. Six died and at least 60 more were injured in thefighting, said Rajen Singh, a local police official.
