Musharraf to visit Malaysia and Indonesia

Islamabad, Jan 29, SPA -- Pakistan's President General Pervez Musharraf will leave here tomorrow for Malaysia and Indonesia on a three-day visit to discuss Palestine, Lebanese crisis, Iraq and US-Iran nuclear standoff with the leaders of two Muslim states, English language daily The Nation reported. Musharraf recently visited five Arab countries - Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Syria and the United Arab Emirates - as part of his Middle East peace initiative. The President's visits to Malaysia and Indonesia are also aimed at discussing Middle East with focus on Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq and Iran, a senior official told the newspaper. Before his visit to Arab states, the President spoke on telephone to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad. On his return home, he had conversation on telephone with Turkey's Prime Minister Tayyip Recep Erdogan to adopt a comprehensive strategy by Muslim countries to rectify the deteriorating situation in the Middle East. The official said that the President's new initiative sought a strong, neutral and credible united voice of the Muslim world aimed at adopting a plan to resolve lingering dispute of Palestine. He said that a number of initiatives were being pursued for peace, the one that could succeed, need to be evolved through a consultative process of key Muslim countries while keeping in view the prevailing international situation. According to official, Pakistan could play a pivotal role in bringing the Muslim world together. He said that the world leaders, in particular the Muslim states, looked forward to Pakistan to bring peace to the Islamic world. He said after his visit to Malaysia and Indonesia, Musharraf's peace initiative was likely to take him to several other key Muslim states as a part of the plan to evolve joint strategy for addressing the disputes and disharmony in the Muslim world.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/421490
