Colombo, April 6, SPA -- Seven Sri Lankan sailors were wounded and another was reported missing Friday as the navy clashed with Tamil rebel suicide cadres and sank one of their boats off the north-western coast of the country, military sources said. A navy Inshore Patrol Craft (IPC) on patrol off the Kalpitiya coast, 200 kilometers north of the capital, had detected five "Sea Tiger" (rebel naval wing) boats on Friday morning and confronted them, sparking off the clash, the sources said. The navy officially confirmed that one rebel boat with suicide cadres was sunk, but claimed that only one sailor sustained minor injuries, the German News Agency "DPA" reported. The remaining boats of the rebels had fled the area. --SPA www.spa.gov.sa/438742
