SRINAGAR, INDIA, MAY 31 (SPA) - TWO DEMONSTRATORS WERE KILLED IN KASHMIR ON WEDNESDAY WHEN INDIAN SOLDIERS FIRED ON AN ANGRY MOB PROTESTING OVER THE DEATHS OF 21 SCHOOL CHILDREN IN A BOAT ACCIDENT, WITNESSES SAID. THE CHILDREN DROWNED ON TUESDAY WHEN A NAVY BOAT CAPSIZED IN THE WULAR LAKE, 65 KM (40 MILES) NORTH OF SRINAGAR, INDIAN KASHMIR’S SUMMER CAPITAL. OFFICIALS SAID THE BOAT SANK AFTER SOME CHILDREN SHIFTED THEIR WEIGHT TO ONE SIDE. EYEWITNESS AMONG HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE WHO HAD GATHERED NEAR THE LAKE TO PROTEST AGAINST ALLEGED NEGLIGENCE BY THE NAVY SAID THE CROWD WAS FIRED UPON BY SOLDIERS. "WHEN WE REACHED AN ARMY CAMP, THE SOLDIERS FIRED AT US INDISCRIMINATELY," RIYAZ AHMAD, ONE EYEWITNESS, TOLD REUTERS. THREE PROTESTERS WERE ALSO WOUNDED, HE ADDED. AN ARMY SPOKESMAN DENIED TROOPS OPENED FIRE FIRST. HE SAID A SUSPECTED MILITANT IN THE CROWD HAD FIRED AT TROOPS, WOUNDING A SOLDIER.
