Bishkek, Oct 15, SPA -- Kyrgyzstan's President KurmanbekBakiyev on Saturday called for stronger diplomatic effortsto ensure security in this ex-Soviet nation which he saidwas at risk from unrest in neighboring Afghanistan. "We're experiencing a negative effect from theinstability in Afghanistan, drug trafficking andinternational terrorism," Bakiyev told lawmakers andCabinet officials. He said that Kyrgyzstan's location inCentral Asia where global powers' strategic interests meetraises the need for a balanced foreign policy. Kyrgyzstan neighbors China and hosts both U.S.-allied andRussian air bases. Earlier this week, Bakiyev reassuredvisiting U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice thatU.S.-led troops supporting combat operations in Afghanistancould stay in Kyrgyzstan as long as the war on terrorcontinues. Bakiyev warned his ministers Saturday to be careful whenmaking statements on foreign policy so as not to damagerelations with other nations.
